Have you ever considered the Cod? By 1550, over half of all fish eaten in Europe was Cod caught off the coast of North America. Now? When is the last time you saw Cod at the supermarket? Yea, not so much anymore…
This happened over and over, to the point that most popular species are in scarce supply and high demand. Bad news…the oceans looked so big, but ‘however many fish in the sea’, once they are overfished, they are overfished!
So, fish are very healthy for you, and you rather enjoy eating them…what is the answer? First off, look at where your fish came from…if it says ‘Wild Caught’ on the front, consider it closely…Origin China?…don’t put it in your cart, or think hard…if its wild caught, the Chinese are often caught raping and pilliaging where they aren’t allowed, with no regard for the enviornment, the future, or even tomorrow…and even if it is harvested off the coast, do you want to eat it anyway? If it says New Zealand, go ahead, they have extensive planning and research put into their harvesting…pretty much anywhere else is heavily fished, good luck finding their wild caught fish…
Ok, what other choices do I have? Very expensive wild caught fish from New Zealand, very cheap wild caught fish (or farm raised) from China…what am I to do?
Tilapia:
Tilapia, several species and their hybrids of Oreochromis, are the second most important group of farm raised fish in the world. Tilapia farming and consumption are rapidly increasing in the US. Tilapia is now the sixth most popular seafood consumed in the United States.
Good for you, safe, and practically guilt free (as much as anything is these days). And, it tastes pretty damn good too (I’m having Tilapia Calypso style tonight).
NOTE: DO NOT BUY IT IF IT SAYS FARM RAISED IN CHINA…(just a little tip, make sure you examine the above link about farm raised aquaculture in China…)
