Pearl Jam – Pearl Jam

April 16th, 2006

We have about sixteen days left.

Billboard – Overview

Billboard – Band on individual songs

I'm currently listening to a leak, about 1/4 mastered and the rest unmastered.  Upon my third listen through, I am…well, I am nearly estatic.  I'm currently listening to "Inside Job" and it reminds me of Rusted Root, Dire Straits, and Pink Floyd all at the same time.  Fucking awesome.

I could review each song, but I'll quote someone else who did a fine job:

It’s nice having friends who work for management companies…

My Personal Review of the new album “Pearl Jam”… (excuse any type-o’s)

Life Wasted: One of my favorites and a perfect way to open up the new album. Very upbeat and you can tell it’s a Pearl Jam song, but it doesn’t sound like any of their other tunes. “Life Wasted I’m never going back again. I escaped it, a life wasted.”

World Wide Suicide: Most of you have heard this song so I don’t have to get to into it. When I first heard it, I didn’t like it too much… but it has grown on me.

Comatose: Not my favorite by any means. But people who like “Spin The Black Circle” will love this song. It has that same energy and reminds you of Vitalogy.

Severed Hand: Again, not one of my favorites. Although this is the first song I really can hear Boom playing his keys. The guitar is also really good. I am just not a fan of Eddie's style on this song, where he dubs his voice about 4 times… Kind of like “Gremmie Out Of Control”. The bridge is really good on here though.

Marker In The Sand: One of my favorite songs on the new album. Eddie sounds great, the chorus is amazing and reminds me a little bit of “Down” although it shouldn’t because they sound nothing a like. But this is a great song. Favorite line “Now you’ve got both sides, killing in God’s name, but God is nowhere to be found.”

Parachutes: Did someone say fucking amazing? Reminds me a lot of (old) Genesis meets the Beatles. This song is beyond great. It’s a slight departure from anything they have done in the past, but the closest would be “In Hiding” from Yield, but again it’s nothing like it! Top notch song writing here.

Unemployable: Again another song most of you have heard. I love this song. It’s not Pearl Jam’s best, but it is catchy and the chorus is so smooth and gets you feeling great and optimistic… at least it does for me.

Big Wave: One of the heavier songs on the album. Reminds me a lot of the Ramones… which is a good thing. Once again Eddie’s vocals are amazing… not to mention the great riffs by Mike and Stone. Close to punk… in the Pearl Jam sense of the word of course.

Gone: There always has to be one like this on every album, which I am thankful for. Think of All or None, Nothing man, and each “slower” song. I could have seen Bruce Springsteen doing this song. It’s a good song but I think I need a little more time for it to grow on me. I love the verse, but to me the chorus gets to “pop”.

Wasted Reprise: This is a Boom song with Eddie singing the chorus of Wasted Life while the sounds of the organ are growing. Just under a minute… more of filler than a song.
… FUCKING AWESOME! I can’t even explain this one, lyrics, vocal pattern, chorus, guitars, it’s amazing! The first notes make you think of the Cure’s disintegration, but when Eddie sings, it becomes a new Pearl Jam classic.

Come Back: Very 50’s sounding to me, which is good, cause I love classics like Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Of course one can tell its modern, but it just has the “oldies” feeling. A great song, I am glad they wrote this one. I guarantee this one will be played before many encores at upcoming shows.

Inside Job: Coming in at just over 7 minutes, I think this is the longest Pearl Jam song released. It’s very slow and think Pink Floyd (guitars and bass) meets Bruce Springsteen (lyrics and piano). A great way to end a great album.

I am so happy with this album. Sure I’ll skip through one or two songs, but hey, I do that with most of my albums, except of course The Beach Boy’s Pet Sounds.

I think you’ll all be happy come early May… Peace.

Army Reserve: Again

That and a whole lot more…
