Filling out a survey at a PA State website…

May 15th, 2006

This survey is designed to help the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania better serve PowerPort portal visitors.

please scrap this POS and start over with a decent web design team.

this poll/survey is pathetic.  honestly, it checks all of the boxes by default?  what mental midget thought THAT would be a good idea?

this site sucks.  i just looked it up in the dictionary.  yep, right there it is.

find your polling place is broken/a disaster/a joke.  The webform is 'why I hate the government' in one concise webpage.

The easy way :
Find your polling place : enter your zipcode.  INSTOPRESTO OMFG IT WORKS.

Your way :
FIND YOUR POLLING PLACE
Unable to locate polling place information.
To find the polling place for a specific residential location, provide the residential address below and click the Find Polling Place button.

OMFG IT DOESN'T WORK!  AND THERE ARE NO USEFUL ERROR MESSAGES AS TO WHY IT MIGHT NOT WORK.  OMFG!

What set off this bomb in my brain?

http://www.votingbooth.state.pa.us/ and

http://www.dos.state.pa.us/voting/cwp/view.asp?a=1206&Q=443544&votingNav=|

Are they serious?  I consider myself a pretty decent internet user.  I have quick eyes and I can cope with bad design…I couldn't get their webform to work, I couldn't find it again after I left (either through their nav menus nor their site search).  I found a link that looked promising that took me offsite to that joke of a site, which was apparently completely schizophrenic: the link said 'Voting in your County', the website title said 'Ready.Set.Vote', the content title said 'Welcome to the Pennsylvania Cultural Elections' and the body said the purpose was to introduce voters to 'some of the new technology being used in our state'.  I bet Grandma loves using PA Power Port…

IF THE NEW TECHNOLOGY IS ANYTHING LIKE THE FUCKING CLUSTERASSBRAINRAPESHITFUCK OF A WEBSITE THESE SHITHEADS ARE FOISTING OFF AS A GOOD ATTEMPT WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS, I CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE DIEBOLD CROWN OUR NEXT RULER.

EDIT : It is no wonder that terrorists and hackers exist.  That website is such a worthless piece of shit (that I am SURE millions of dollars of state taxes were spent on) it probably inspires new generations to become hackers ('terrorists').  If I were a terrorist, I would take down up the PA PowerPort site first.  Then the sewage systems.  But PA PowerPort would be at the top of the list.  I had a lot of non-fun going to www.state.pa.us and trying to find out where to vote (as an exercise in (f)utility), and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good time.  15 seconds is how long it should take, right???

Its been a long week…

May 14th, 2006

I think I've had more to drink in the past week than the past two or three months combined.  Last week (I think) K & I had two bottles of wine : Hunter Red and Wedding White from 'The Winery at Wilcox'.  K loved the red, I loved the white.  Before we finished the white we were looking for 'compact' drinks to take to the PJ concert.  I remembered that I loved the very easy to make White Russian and she liked Diet Coke and Coconut Capt Morgan Rum.  So, we spent the week working on that (slowly!).  I ordered two bottles of the white and they came in yesterday at the local Wine & Spirits, so I broke into that…I'm going to need to take some time off…

Saw a couple movies.  I liked Shopgirl a lot.  K was ambivalent.  She watched Brokeback (Pokeypoke) Mountain and didn't know what the big deal was.  I tried to watch as little as possible and thought it was sad.

I had more to say but it seems to have slipped my mind.  Yes, I remeber that the webpage renders incorrectly in IE, I promise I'll try to fix it someday…

EDIT: does the page still render incorrectly in IE?  I just thought to check it and it looks fine now…strange.  Comments would be helpful!  (hopefully it fixed itself)

EDIT x2 : I remembered a couple things : 43things to be specific, and CalendarHub.  I 'auditioned' a number of online calendar sites, Kiko, 30boxes and CalendarHub, and ended up loving something about each but being able to live with CalendarHub (specifically for the sharing features, I'm hoping that we'll adopt it at work to help co-ordinate 'everything').  If you find a need to organize your schedule, any of them are wonderful and free.

Amazing…disturbing…just plain odd…

A letter to Ebay.

May 8th, 2006

Message: Ebay's feedback system is broken.

It seems the majority of sellers hold feedback hostage, even after the buyers portion of the transaction has been successfully completed. Ebay should require the seller to leave feedback within 14 days or automatically give the seller negative feedback. Within 14 days of auctions end, either the buyer PAID or the buyer DIDN'T PAY, either of which the seller would leave feedback regarding. If the auction takes more than 14 days to successfully complete, there is SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG.

I have purchased dozens of items which I never received feedback for, even though I pay via PayPal within hours of auctions end. And I'm tired of it.

Ebay is a gigantic, wealthy corporation. Ebay can't take 1/2 a day to review its website functionality and improve the user experience? How long has this been going on?

Between this problem and the rampant bypassing of fees with outrageous shipping costs…pathetic.
