Back up your data, for the love of god…

September 15th, 2006

Sure, just making backups is fine…but what happens when 'something' occurs to both your computer and your backups?  What, you don't move your backups to a remote and secure location regularly?  Yea, that has been bothering me as well…at least, since I started at least semi-annually backing up my data…

http://amd.streamload.com/

The free subscription has 25GB of storage space and a 25MB single file size limit, with 1GB of downloads a month.  I keep about 600MB of file on my laptop that I really ought to sort and put on our server so they are backed up daily, but…

The beta software allows automatic off-site backups to be made.  I'd suggest it for anyone who can't seem to ever get down to actually backing up their information…the interface is pretty laggy (sloppy coding I'd guess, it won't restart its service automatically if you kill it for whatever reason, simply fails without message…perfect…)…basically, I'd run it at night after everything else is done…and, there apparently isn't any way to cancel the upload in progress…and the website app is buggy…ok, it pretty much sucks ass, but its free and it has potential…

If the 25MB limit is hurting your…collections…grab 7Zip from 7zip.org and archive those puppies, making sure to hit the Split to volumes – 3.5"…

UPDATE: I continued looking, since it had been a while since I looked into online backup solutions…Mozy and Carbonite apparently are two or the better solutions as well.  I am thinking about trying Mozy myself as I am only dealing with about 1.5GB of material that I'd like regularly synced offsite.   Mozy doesn't have those problems with file sizes, and seems to have a lot of other very good features.  Carbonite has a great feature set (looks a lot like the Maxtor OneTouch external drive I got for backups here at work), $5 a month too…which isn't bad at all considering what you get.

FURTHER UPDATE : Mozy is a heck of a deal for being free.  Forget that Sloppy AMD crap…get Mozy…except I can't get the software to connect to their servers atm…I really like their interface, very streamlined and simple.  Carbonite works fine, but the interface is a little overwrought…the entire execution is rather overwrought…I definitely prefer the minimalistic 'just works' route taken by the Mozy team.  Mozy finally connected to the servers and is now backing up my laptop data.

Mozy FTW UPDATE:  When you go to configure Mozy, I'd recommend that you just skip the 'Backup Sets' tab and go right to the 'File System' tab and check off the items you want to back-up.  Don't worry about going over quota, as you check items it dynamically updates the total size along the bottom.  For the 'Schedule', I'd recommend Automatic if your computer doesn't do decentrailzed computing AND you leave it on all of the time, and Scheduled if you only have your computer on at very specific times (like 9-5, and you're using it the entire time).  Enjoy your new 2GB automatic off-site backups!

Sybian Machines…

September 14th, 2006

I’ve mentioned them in casual conversation a couple times, let it be a mystery no more.

And here I thought vibrators were only used to treat hysteria!  ‘Medical orgasm’ indeed…

Oral Care…

September 14th, 2006

When I was younger, I never worried much about oral health…brush twice a day, visit the dentist once or twice a year, no problems!

Once I hit about 19, suddenly my mouth began betraying me…I went to the dentist and had a cavity!!!  How could such a thing happen???  I was shocked, but not terribly concerned…my dentist can make me all better, right?

So this happens for a few years (coincided with me abstaining from alcohol, maybe some bacteria got out of wack without the yeast holding them in check?) and culminated in a near miss of needing a root canal last spring.  I started to actually care about my oral health…dentists are expensive and I'm vain enough to care how my teeth look.  The root canal repair left a fairly severe food trap, which I needed to keep clean.  Problem is, cleaning it usually hurts.  I flossed half-heartedly and started using a fluoride mouth rinse twice a day.  I ended up bailing on the flossing and six months later had two more cavities filled, way on the upper outsides of my top left and right rear molars.  Great I thought…my upper left tooth is a cyborg, more machine than man.  The dentists recommended one of those electric Oral B toothbrushes and I was like, sure looks like a scam.  Spoke with Kell about it and we decided what the hell…its only $50…(notice the sarcasm?).

Let me tell you, that thing is the best $50 I've ever spent.  We like it so much we took it into the jungles of Mexico with us!  The few times that we haven't had it, and had to brush with a stone-age manual brush…terrible, felt like we weren't getting anything clean, couldn't reach, etc etc…

Primarily, the small head and vigorous action means that you can really reach way back and make sure everything is clean.  I could hardly fit a manual brush along the upper outsides of my top rear molars…this thing can reach every surface.

So, the dentist said if I did a good job maintaining oral health, I could kick my visits from six months to a year.  However, I'd need to add flossing to my regime.  Six months later, no love…I hated flossing.  I'd floss maybe once a month.  Luckily I didn't cause any significant damage with my lack of flossing, but there was still enough plaque that they could tell I wasn't ready yet.  So, this time back from the dentist I'm doing it all:  The Oral B, the Act rinse, flossing my food trap every night, flossing my entire mouth once a week.

I am definitely a minimum effort sort of person (as you can tell by my lack of proofreading before hitting the submit button on my posts here…), but I feel increasingly compelled to keep my teeth in my head.

Damn planned obsolescence isn't going to take me!  I'm living forever, and I'll be twenty years old the entire time!

EDIT: I forgot a step, on my last trip to the dentist they gave me a tounge scraper.  Now I can't understand how I could ever go without it.  On one side are two rows of bristles, on the other two rows of slightly scalloped undulating ribs.  Wonderful device!

Immigration…

September 12th, 2006

I received an email today, and thought it interesting enough to post my response…

A couple things I've found 'interesting' since my original response:

Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation – Someone mutilated my genitals and I'm not even Jewish!  …or a woman!!!

"CONSERVATIVE" SIDE OF THE FENCE, READ THIS AND LEARN TO UNDERSTAND YOUR FEELINGS – as written by a former Democratic Governor from Colorado…

America is…too rich… – 1% of the population owns 33% of the privately held wealth, the bottom 80% of the population owns 20% of the wealth…

History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. – (quoted from the text itself below!!) : No nation in history has survived the ravages of time.  Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall!

American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America – what this has to do with immigration I don't even know.  I guess Reganomics and the Beaner invasion are somehow fundamentally tied together?

It is reminiscent of George Orwell's book "1984." In that story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building:? "War is peace," "Freedom is slavery," and "Ignorance is strength." – the think tank that produced this email was just dying to squeeze this one in due to the irony factor, even though the relevance was again wildly tangential at best…must have been an intern's first effort…

Goodbye America!

FOR THOSE OF YOU ON THE "CONSERVATIVE" SIDE OF THE
FENCE, READ THIS AND LEARN TO UNDERSTAND YOUR
FEELINGS BETTER THAN EVER.

FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT ON THE "CONSERVATIVE" SIDE OF
THE FENCE, READ AND LEARN FROM A DIFFERENT
VIEWPOINT.

Please take the time to read this; it ought to scare
the pants off you!

We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of
Colorado. In that context his thoughts are
particularly poignant. Last week there was an
immigration overpopulation conference in Washington,
DC, filled to capacity by many of America's finest
minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by
the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his
latest book, "Mexifornia," explaining how
immigration — both legal and illegal was destroying
the entire state of California. He said it would
march across the country until it destroyed all
vestiges of The American Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D.
Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to
destroy America. The audience sat spellbound as he
described eight methods for the destruction of the
United States. He said, "If you believe that America
is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then
let's destroy America. It is not that hard to do. No
nation in history has survived the ravages of time.
Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations
rise and fall! And that 'An autopsy of history would
show that all great nations commit suicide.'"

"Here is how they do it," Lamm said:? "First, to
destroy America, turn America into a bilingual or
multi-lingual and bicultural country." History shows
that no nation can survive the tension, conflict,
and antagonism of two or more competing languages
and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to
be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society
to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour
Lipset, put it this way: "The histories of bilingual
and bicultural societies that do not assimilate are
histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy." Canada,
Belgium, Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of
national existence in which minorities press for
autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus
have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic
rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques,
Bretons, and Corsicans."

Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America , "Invent
'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants to
maintain their culture. I would make it an article
of belief that all cultures are equal. That there
are no cultural differences. I would make it an
article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout
rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination
by the majority. Every other explanation is out of
bounds.

Third, "We could make the United States an 'Hispanic
Quebec' without much effort. The key is to celebrate
diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz
said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: "The apparent
success of our own multiethnic and multicultural
experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance
but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once
dictated ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an
American, we are left with only tolerance and
pluralism to hold us together." Lamm said, "I would
encourage all immigrants to keep their own language
and culture. I would replace the melting pot
metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is
important to ensure that we have various cultural
subgroups living in America enforcing their
differences rather than as Americans, empha sizing
their similarities."

"Fourth, I would make our fastest growing
demographic group the least educated. I would add a
second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and
antagonistic to our population. I would have this
second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high
school."

"My fifth point for destroying America would be to
get big foundations and business to give these
efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic
identity, and I would establish the cult of
'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think
that their lack of success was the fault of the
majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming
all minority failure on the majority population."

"My sixth plan for America's downfall would include
dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I
would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress
differences rather than similarities. Diverse people
worldwide! Are mostly engaged in hating each other
– that is, when they are not killing each other. A
diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most
historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it
takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient
Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to
the same race; they possessed a common language and
literature; and they worshipped the same gods. All
Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common
enemy, Persia, threatened their liberty. Yet all
these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two
factors: local patriotism and geographical
conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece
fell. "E. Pluribus Unum" –
From many, one. In that historical reality, if we
put the emphasis on the 'pluribus' instead of the
'Unum,' we will balkanize America as surely as
Kosovo."

"Next to last, I would place all subjects off
limits; make it taboo to talk about anything against
the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word similar
to 'heretic' in the 16th century — that stopped
discussion! and paralyzed thinking. Words like
'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion and debate.
Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country,
having established multi-culturism, having the large
foundations fund the doctrine of 'Victimology,' I
would next make it impossible to enforce our
immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That
because immigration has been good for America, it
must always be good. I would make every individual
immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact
of millions of them."

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm
wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally
he said, "Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson
Davis's book 'Mexifornia." His book is dangerous. It
exposes the plan to destroy America. If you feel
America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that
book."

There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose
like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the
conference. Every American in that room knew that
everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding
methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively
across the United States today. Discussion is being
suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the
foundation of our educational system and national
cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice
female genital mutilation are growing as we
celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing
into the Third World as corporations create a Third
World in America – take note of California and other
states — to date, ten million illegal aliens and
growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell's
book "1984." In that story, three slogans are
engraved in the Ministry of Truth building:? "War is
peace," "Freedom is slavery," and "Ignorance is
strength."

Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on
everyone at the conference that our nation and the
future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble
and worsening fast. If we don't get this immigration
monster stopped within three years, it will rage
like a California wildfire and destroy everything in
its path, especially The American Dream.

If you care for and love our country as I do, take
the time to pass this on just as I did for you.
Trust me, NOTHING is going to happen if! you don't!

My reply, below:

I think that is a very tolerant and practical examination of the problem.  The only thing I don't agree with is the dual citizenship, I am not big on 'Nationalism' as a tool to enforce unity (Nationalism places value with symbols rather than ideas and values, in my opinion) and barring dual citizenship seems to be trying to eliminate the competitor's symbol rather than integrating people into OUR country.

The answer isn't to make immigration illegal, the answer is to properly make these people citizens of the United States instead of just sweeping them under the rug.  As long as they are under the rug, they won't learn English, they won't pay taxes, they won't contribute fully to our nation.  Making things illegal doesn't make them go away…just look at how wonderfully effective criminalizing drug use has been, the prison population is at an all time high and there is no end in sight for our 'War on Drugs'.

I wouldn't call Dick Lamm's comments conservative or liberal…I'd call them Progressive!  Now, the blurb on the end of his statements, that was sensationalist and designed to incite fear, but other than that it was a pretty good description of the problems of our current immigration problem.  Of course, waves of immigrants have always been feared and discriminated against:

Between 1880 and 1920, the cities expanded at a previously unimaginable pace. New York grew by more than 300 percent, Chicago 400 percent, Detroit 700 percent. And the real blockbusters were out West: Los Angeles grew by over 1,000 percent from a mere 50,000 people in 1890 to over half a million in just 30 years. These newcomers were often described by what they were not: not Protestant, not English-speaking, not skilled, not educated, and not liked.

"The entrance of such vast masses of peasantry degraded below our utmost conceptions, is a matter which no intelligent patriot can look upon without the gravest apprehension and alarm. They are beaten men from beaten races. They have none of the ideas and aptitudes such as belong to those who were descended from the tribes that met under the oak trees of old Germany to make laws and choose chiefs." Francis Walker, 1896.

One hundred and ten years later, history repeats.

Jersey Shore Senior High Class of 1996 Reunion…

September 10th, 2006

http://flickr.com/photos/pollywogs/sets/72157594277874428/show/

I'm not the best photographer…hopefully I wasn't too obnoxious…I know my wife had too much to drink…or perhaps someone slipped her a roofie…I'm guessing it was Travis Lupold…

I had a much better time than I thought I would have.  It was very nice seeing everyone exactly as I remember them.  Hopefully we'll do this often enough so that any changes are gradual…and I like the dim lighting, it hides my gray…

Of the people who did show up (what like an eighth of the total class?) it was a good…there were only a couple people I noticed we not there.

Apparently there was a survey floating around?

I really enjoyed myself, thanks to everyone who came out!

EDIT : I finally spent the time to fix the editor, links are now working woohoo…
