Eating Healthy, an update…

January 19th, 2008

A continuation of:

So our diet has been going surprisingly well.  We’ve been getting around 1300-1600 calories per day (Kell on the low side, me on the high side), spread out (mostly) into three 400-500 calories per meal.   We’re allowed one 100-150 snack if we’d like it, so I went and bought myself a case of beer.  Getting seven a week works good for drinking a couple on Friday and Saturday evenings…

Last Saturday I had a pile of empty calories thanks of the local watering hole, but other than that we’ve been surprisingly on-target.

One thing that I’ve slightly missed is our pizza. We used to make pizza at home every week, and it has probably been about a month since we’ve had that singular pleasure. We’d start with a Boboli crust, add some part-skim mozzarella and Del Grosso pizza sauce and then season the hell out of it with onion, garlic, oregano and other various wonderful bits (we kicked the pepperoni habit a while ago).

I kept thinking that it couldn’t be that bad for us, so I was planning on calculating out what exactly was in it. While I was upstairs working on our hydronics, Kell went and worked it out:

Crust: 142 calories per serving (1/6 of the pie).

Cheese: 53 per serving

Sauce: 20 per serving

Total: 215 per slice

Per serving (we each eat half of the pizza typically): 645 calories.

Not too bad. We’ve been getting between 350-400 calories per meal, so going 250 calories over once or twice a month sounds wonderful to me.

The best diet is the one you make habit, so I guess keeping the proles happy is an important part of making it last.

Wow! I can’t believe how dedicated you guys are being to this calorie restriction diet! I believe Todd and I fell hard off the wagon Saturday night at TGIFridays (appretizers and booze all around!). I’ll bet we consumed your weekly calorie allottment in just one night. We have not been counting calories but still continue to try to generally eat better.

I don’t feel as though I am making any improvement weight-wise, which goes to show that eating heathier is not the same as eating “less”. Also, I need to step up the exercise routine.

Thanks for the update on your continued efforts! It’s good to hear inspirational stories from my “diet buddies”.

After eating the pizza Saturday I felt pretty full, not stuffed as I would have expected but then the rest of the evening all I could think about was food. I just wanted to eat, even though I wasn’t hungry. I was feeling tormented and there really wasn’t anything specific I wanted…though Lipton ring-Os went through my mind…I think I was craving salt. I ended up having 2 snacks and 2 glasses of wine…. :(
I should have went to bed at a decent time…that would definitely help me to not snack too much.

Other than that, we have been really good…actually eating less for breakfast & lunch than what is recommended (we skip out on the dairy it recommends…neither of us drink milk and eating cheese or cottage cheese for breakfast doesn’t appeal to us…sometimes we eat yogurt tho).

Still haven’t weighed myself since the first week so I don’t know where I’m at. I rode the bike 25 mins this wknd…hopefully I can try to work up to 3 times a week.
