A thought without words

Two + Two = Five

September 11th, 2009

It’s society’s fault + Amusing ourselves to death = Huxley WAS correct…

passivity:

…submission to outside influences…the trait of remaining inactive…

egotism:

…the motivation to maintain and enhance favorable views of oneself…placing oneself at the center of one’s world with no direct concern for others…

irrelevance:

…not related, not applicable, unimportant, not connected…

trivial:

…unimportant and petty or frivolous…

distraction:

…an entertainment that provokes pleased interest and distracts you from worries and vexations…drawing someones attention away from something…an obstacle to attention…

…or at least as correct as Orwell himself…while our Rome burns, we fiddle…

Uninformed, uninterested, and unengaged, the majority of the population of the United States has their opinions spoon-fed to them in a calculated fashion.  Contradictory information is necessarily self-expunged.

We are carefully handled to build a world view where our immediate gratification is the sole goal of life.  Heaped upon by cheap foods and shiny toys with which to sate our appetites, there is no desire to attempt a look past the curtain.  Trivialities consume our attention, the bread and circuses placate the masses.  The few not docile enough to be misled are easily cast as unhinged: the simple juxtaposition of those two possibilities is distasteful enough that the masses bury their heads further without any significant effort from outside.  Irrelevance is cultivated in every fashion possible and indeed is vital for the distractions to have any kind of smothering effect…there is a need for prolefeed!

Their control begins to slip away when attention is placed squarely on things that matter.  If it is not trivial it is dangerous!

…while our Rome burns, we fiddle…on dreary days such as these, I permit myself a small space to think “…if they have not the imagination to realize how important the perfection of our situation truly is…”, except my unfortunate pleasure will (would, hopefully) be blunted by their memory hole allowing that “we’ve always been at war with Eastasia”.  Instead of compiling evidence that every moment is precious and requires our combined and full attention and honest best effort, one set of beliefs will effortlessly be replaced with a new set crafted to fit the day and age, and any necessity for sustained mental effort will once again be drained away.

Poverty, the perversion and corruption of entire food chains, pollution of a thousand varieties, war and its aspiring little brother murder, atrocity, extinctions of entire species, consolidation of power further and further up the economic ladder, explotation, injustice, torture, rape, and all the other crimes against itself and the rest of the Earth that humanity is so supremely capable of without batting an eye…good day to you, sir.  You do not stand up to the light of day.

Good post! I love that cartoon, it is so true. Makes me think of the movie Idiocracy.
It is society’s fault but we are all part of society and most buy into the distractions, the greed, the egotism resulting in the rape of Earth. Our wants should not be allowed to destroy this planet, species, forests, seas, etc. If we stopped and started thinking about our actual needs, focused on that and not give in to what society tells us we need…this planet would be so much better off, and so would humans as a whole.
My want should not be more important than someone else’s need to survive.
It’s hard to keep that focus and I struggle all the time to keep that in the front of my mind. But at least I am making an effort.
